Travel Safety in Tanzania: What You Really Need to Know.

Before coming to Tanzania, we’d often get questions like “Is it safe there?” or “Aren’t you worried about crime?” It’s understandable—stories and travel forums can sometimes paint a dramatic picture. But our experience has been very different.

In tourist areas like Arusha, Moshi, the Serengeti, or Zanzibar, we’ve always felt safe walking around, visiting markets, or chatting with locals. People are incredibly warm and welcoming, and most travellers we meet say the same. Like anywhere, of course, you need to stay aware of your surroundings—especially in bigger cities—but the idea that Tanzania is generally unsafe just doesn’t match reality.

According to the Global Peace Index, Tanzania actually moved up 11 spots in 2023, ranking safer than countries like France or China. Yes, incidents can happen—petty theft in crowded areas, or occasional scams targeting tourists—but they’re the exception, not the rule. With some common sense (like keeping valuables tucked away and avoiding unlit streets at night), you’re far more likely to come home with stories of generosity and adventure than anything else. We’ve travelled solo, with friends, by car and on foot—and every time, what stood out most wasn’t the danger, but the kindness.
