If you were packing your bag to come visit us in Tanzania, what would you throw in? Probably lots of light clothing—tank tops, sandals, maybe a sunhat. That’s what most people picture when they think of this part of the world: endless sunshine and tropical heat. And while that’s sometimes true, it’s not the whole story.
Tanzania is a big country with incredibly varied landscapes—and just as varied weather. On the coast and in Zanzibar, the heat can be intense, especially from November to March when temperatures often reach 30–35°C (86–95°F), with high humidity. But head inland or uphill, and you’ll get a completely different climate. In Arusha, the Ngorongoro Highlands, or the Usambara Mountains, early mornings can be chilly, and evenings cool enough to need a fleece or even a blanket. These areas sit over 1,400 metres above sea level, and we’ve had plenty of mornings where we’ve huddled under a shawl with coffee in hand, waiting for the sun to break through the mist.
So no, it’s not always hot in Tanzania—and that’s part of the beauty. If you’re planning a trip, it’s smart to pack for contrast: think sunscreen and sandals, and socks and a sweater. Trust us, nothing beats watching elephants move through golden morning light when you're warm, prepared, and totally in the moment.
